A crack, coloured lines, a fading backlight: a damaged display dooms neither your Mac nor your budget. Depending on the symptom and the model, the right answer isn’t always the same — here’s how to decide, with the real prices for each MacBook family.
On modern MacBooks, a broken screen is replaced as a full assembly (panel, glass, casing, camera and hinges assembled together): it’s reliable and predictable. The price depends above all on the Mac family — from €80 for certain 13″ MacBook Pros to over €900 for a recent 16″ — and on the condition chosen (refurbished to like-new or grades A/B/C, cheaper). The simple rule: compare the price of the display to the price of an equivalent refurbished Mac.
Not all “broken” screens are broken in the same way. The symptom points to the solution — and the budget.
Starred glass, a crushed corner, a black area that keeps spreading: the panel is dead, and replacing the display assembly is the only real solution. Good news: it’s the most common and best-mastered repair there is.
Good reflex: back up your data while the Mac still powers on.Without any impact, these symptoms can come from the panel or from the cable linking it to the logic board. A diagnosis is essential before buying anything: sometimes the repair is far lighter than a full display.
If you can make out the image with a torch, the screen is displaying but no longer lighting up. Depending on the model, this can come down to the logic board (a backlight fuse or circuit) — a micro-soldering repair that’s often cheaper than a new screen.

The more recent the display (Liquid Retina XDR, notch), the pricier the part — and the more attractive the grades become.

Screen replacement is a common and well-mastered repair, and the part almost always costs far less than an equivalent Mac. The real question lies elsewhere: if the price of the display exceeds half the price of an equivalent refurbished Mac, you’re better off buying the refurbished Mac — below that, replace the screen and enjoy years more use.

The grade describes only the appearance (micro-scratches on the casing, for example): the display is checked on every grade, and the warranty is identical. Grade C = the same functional screen, at the gentlest price.
