It's the little code that changes everything: A1502, A2338, A2141… This Apple model number is the key to ordering the right part the first time. Here's where to find it in 30 seconds, how to read it, and why it matters more than the year or the marketing name.
Two Macs that look alike — same size, same year — can have incompatible parts. The only reliable marker is the Apple model number in the form of an A followed by 4 digits (e.g. A2338). You'll find it engraved under the Mac or in macOS. With this code, you choose a screen, battery, keyboard or SSD with no risk of error. Remember it: it's your parts ID card.
The fastest depends on whether your Mac still turns on. All of them give the same A#### code.
Turn your MacBook over: in tiny print near the hinge, you'll read "Model No. A####". On an iMac or Mac mini, it's under the base or on the back. This marking doesn't depend on the state of the Mac — it works even when it's off.
Tip: take a photo, the text is fine. > About This Mac menu. There you'll see the name and the year; for the A####, open System Report > Hardware or look up your serial number on Apple's website. The marketing name alone ("MacBook Pro 13" 2020") isn't always enough: a single year can hide two models.
