MagSafe 1, MagSafe 2 or USB-C: how to tell them apart?
MagSafe 1 (until 2012 on Unibody models): thick, narrow magnetic connector. MagSafe 2 (MacBook Pro Retina 2012-2015): thinner, wider connector, not compatible with MagSafe 1 without a converter. USB-C (2016-2020): reversible oval connector, on all of the Mac's Thunderbolt ports. 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro models since 2021 have a MagSafe 3 port, to be used with a USB-C charger and the USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable; they also charge through their USB-C ports.
Which wattage should you choose?
Choose at least the original wattage shown in the table. A more powerful charger poses no risk: the Mac only draws what it needs. A charger that is too weak charges slowly, and the battery may even drain under heavy workloads (video editing, gaming). On 16″ models since 2021, the 140 W charger enables fast charging; a 96 W one works, but more slowly.
Frequently asked questions
Original or compatible charger?
Both are tested in our workshop before shipping. The original Apple charger remains the benchmark; the compatible one offers the same wattage and the same connector.
My MacBook Pro no longer charges: is it the charger?
Try another charger and another wall outlet. If the Mac still doesn't charge, the problem is more likely the charging port or the logic board: our workshop in Paris can run a diagnosis.
How do I find the model number of my MacBook Pro?
It is engraved in small print on the bottom case (A followed by 4 digits). See our guide How to identify your Mac's model and year.
