MagSafe 1, MagSafe 2 or USB-C: how to tell them apart?

MagSafe 1 (2008-2011): thick, narrow magnetic connector, T- or L-shaped. MagSafe 2 (2012-2017): thinner, wider connector; it does not fit a MagSafe 1 port, and vice versa, except with a MagSafe 1 to MagSafe 2 converter. USB-C (since 2018): reversible oval connector. MacBook Air M2 and later models also have a MagSafe 3 port, used with a USB-C charger and the USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable; they can also charge directly through a USB-C port.

Original or compatible charger?

We offer original Apple chargers and compatible chargers of the same wattage, all tested in our workshop before shipping. A charger more powerful than the original poses no risk: your Mac only draws the power it needs. A less powerful charger charges more slowly, or not at all during heavy use.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a MacBook Pro charger with my MacBook Air?
Yes, if it has the same connector (MagSafe 1, MagSafe 2 or USB-C): a 60 W or 85 W charger works on a MacBook Air designed for 45 W.

My charger no longer charges: is it the charger or the Mac?
Try another wall outlet and check the light on the MagSafe connector (amber while charging, green when charged). If it stays off with another charger that works, the problem is more likely the port or the logic board: our workshop can run a diagnosis.

How do I find the model number of my MacBook Air?
It is engraved in small print on the bottom case (A followed by 4 digits). See our guide How to identify your Mac's model and year.
