Why 14 and 16-inch screens are the most expensive

  • The technology. Since 2021, the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros have a 120 Hz mini-LED screen with a notch: it is the most expensive part in the range. The 2012 to 2020 Intel Retina models are much cheaper, and the 2008 to 2012 Unibody models cheaper still.
  • The size. Within the same generation, a 16-inch costs more than a 14-inch, and a 15-inch more than a 13-inch.
  • The glass. On the M5 models, the screen comes with standard glass or with matte nano-texture glass, which costs more: choose the same as the original if you want to keep your Mac's look.
  • The grade. The grade only describes appearance: every screen is tested and working, with the same warranty.

Complete screen or LCD panel only on a MacBook Pro

  • On 2008 to 2012 Unibody models (A1278, A1286), the panel can be replaced on its own: it is the cheapest repair in the table.
  • On Retina and Apple Silicon models, the panel is glued into a thin lid: for an individual, the complete assembly remains the safe choice.
  • On the 2016-2017 13 and 15-inch MacBook Pros (A1706, A1707, A1708), the display cables are part of the assembly: in the event of “flexgate”, it is the complete assembly that needs replacing.
  • Good to know: our catalogue uses the same panel for all 14-inch models from 2021 to 2024, and another for all 16-inch models from the same period. The complete assemblies, however, remain specific to each generation.

Flexgate explained

A complete assembly in grade C can cost less than a new panel: this is currently the case for MacBook Pro 13" M1/M2, MacBook Pro 16" M1/M2/M3, MacBook Pro 16" M4.

Three costly mistakes

  • Confusing the M1 with the 2020 Intel models. The 13-inch MacBook Pro M1/M2 (A2338) and the 2020 Intel models (A2251, A2289) look alike, but their screens are different parts: check the number engraved on the underside of the Mac.
  • Thinking the Touch Bar is part of the screen. It sits above the keyboard: replacing the screen will not fix a faulty Touch Bar.
  • Forgetting the battery. Disconnect it before touching the display cables: a short circuit at that moment damages the logic board.

Do it yourself or use a workshop?

Replacing a complete assembly is doable if you work methodically: you open the bottom case, disconnect the battery, the cables and the antennas, then unscrew the hinges. The recent 14 and 16-inch models call for more care. On Apple Silicon Macs, macOS may then report an “unknown part”: this is not a fault.

And for a 14-inch MacBook Pro M1 Pro?

For the 2021 to 2023 14-inch MacBook Pros (A2442, A2779, A2918, A2992), the complete screen costs €294.95 to €589.90 (price on 29/10/2026).
