Shut down and open the housing
Full shutdown of the Mac (not sleep), charger unplugged. Undo the Pentalobe P5 screws of the bottom case, then unclip it with the spudger starting from a corner, without forcing.
Cracked glass, leaking panel, dead backlight : on a MacBook Retina, the screen is replaced as a complete assembly, hinge to hinge. Here is the procedure in order, the precaution that prevents damage, and the most common faults after a replacement — with their solution.
Since the first MacBook Retina (2012), the LCD panel and the glass are no longer two separate parts : it is a single sealed assembly, with the camera and the brightness sensor. Cracked glass therefore means replacing the complete screen. The rule that avoids 90 % of the trouble : always disconnect the battery before any other connector, and reconnect it very last.
Before touching the slightest internal connector, disconnect the battery even before the screen cable. A short circuit on a powered logic board can burn out components in a fraction of a second : it's the number-one rule of any MacBook opening, whatever the model.
Nothing exotic, but specific bits : a classic Phillips screwdriver set is not enough.

Six phases. Each one matters, but only one is non-negotiable : disconnect the battery before the screen.
Full shutdown of the Mac (not sleep), charger unplugged. Undo the Pentalobe P5 screws of the bottom case, then unclip it with the spudger starting from a corner, without forcing.
First connector touched, without exception. This is what protects the logic board throughout the rest of the operation. Once the battery is disconnected, hold the power button down for 10 seconds to discharge any residual charge before continuing.
The screen cable (eDP/LVDS) on the logic board, then the camera/brightness-sensor flex cable, then the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth antennas if they run through the screen on your model.
Undo the hinges (4 to 6 Torx screws depending on the model) and gently lift the screen, checking that no flex cable is still attached.
Position it, re-tighten the hinges without over-torquing the thread, then reconnect in reverse order : antennas, camera/brightness-sensor flex cable, screen cable.
The battery is reconnected very last, once all the other connectors have been checked. Power the Mac back on with the housing open : image, colours, camera, brightness. Only screw the housing back once everything is validated.
A new screen that seems « buggy » right after fitting is almost never defective : in the vast majority of cases, it's a poorly re-seated connection or a setting to check.
For these three symptoms, if it isn't a simple software setting, in 90 % of cases the cause is a flex cable damaged during handling — most often creased by mistake. The connection flex cables are very fragile : they must never be folded, only gently unfolded, in the direction of their original curve.
The camera/brightness-sensor flex cable re-initialises poorly if it is reconnected with the battery live : this discharge, with the T-CON flex cables disconnected, forces a clean re-initialisation, without touching the hardware. See also our webcam not working guide.
If the camera still doesn't come back, check that the flex cables weren't creased when disconnecting them : they are very fragile, and a creased flex cable is a damaged flex cable.
The ambient light sensor is in the bezel, not on the panel : if the problem persists with the option ticked, the likely cause is a poorly seated camera/brightness-sensor flex cable.
Reopen the housing and check that the eDP/LVDS connector is perfectly seated flat, with no lifted corner : a poorly clipped connector gives exactly this symptom. Also check that you haven't damaged the connector itself (bent or crushed pins), nor creased the flex cable while handling it : in 90 % of cases where it isn't a software setting, that's the cause.
If the image only appears when you shine a torch on the screen, the panel is displaying but the backlight isn't working. First check the screen cable, well seated flat. Here again, if it isn't a simple connection fault : a flex cable creased during handling is the most common cause ; they are too fragile to be folded, only gently unfolded.
Normal on Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1 and newer) : True Tone is tied to data paired to the original screen. A standard replacement screen doesn't reactivate it without a dedicated calibration tool.
If the antennas run through the screen on your model, check that their often tiny connectors are properly re-engaged and not simply resting next to their socket.
« The camera no longer works, the replacement screen is defective. »
In the vast majority of cases, the panel is not to blame : it's the camera/brightness-sensor flex cable that didn't re-initialise cleanly. The move that fixes the problem : disconnect the battery and T-CON flex cables, hold the power button for 10 seconds, then reconnect everything and re-test — before concluding a part is defective.
The rest is just a matter of patience and well-seated flex cables. If post-replacement faults persist despite the checks above, or if you'd rather not open the machine, our workshop in Paris takes care of it, with a full test included.
No, not on a MacBook Retina. The glass and the LCD panel form a single sealed assembly : any glass breakage means changing the complete screen.
With an experienced technician, allow 45 minutes to 1h30. For a first attempt, better to set aside half a day without rushing.
To avoid any accidental short circuit during the following handling. It's the most important precaution of any intervention inside a MacBook.
Rarely. Disconnect the battery and the two flex cables from the screen's T-CON board, hold the power button for 10 seconds, reconnect everything and re-test : this solves the vast majority of cases.
First check System Settings › Displays : the manual slider, then the « Automatically adjust brightness » box, sometimes disabled after a screen replacement. If everything is ticked and nothing changes, the issue is probably a poorly seated flex cable rather than a failing sensor.
