MacBook Wi-Fi Card and Antenna: The Right Part for Your Mac

When Wi-Fi or Bluetooth keeps dropping, or disappears from the settings, the fault may come from the Wi-Fi card (AirPort card), the antenna, or the AirPort bar that carries it. Here is the part that matches your Mac.

Before replacing a part

  1. Restart the Mac and the router, then try another Wi-Fi network.
  2. Check System Settings > Wi-Fi: if Wi-Fi no longer appears at all, the card or its antenna is the cause.
  3. After a screen or case repair, check that the antenna cables are properly reconnected.

On recent MacBooks, the Wi-Fi chip is soldered to the logic board: only the antenna or the AirPort bar can be replaced.

Frequently asked questions

Does Bluetooth use the same card?

Yes, on the Macs concerned, the AirPort card handles both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

What is the AirPort bar?

It is the part that carries the Wi-Fi antennas, often under the display hinge. A pinched or cut cable there makes the signal drop.
