Why your NVMe SSD won’t boot on a 2013-2015 MacBook (and how to fix it)

You’ve fitted a fast, affordable NVMe drive into your MacBook Air or MacBook Pro Retina… and nothing: a frozen Apple logo, a prohibitory sign, or a drive that simply isn’t there. In almost every case, the hardware isn’t to blame: it’s all about the firmware. Here’s why, and the right order of steps to make it work.

An NVMe drive that won’t boot on a 2013-2015 MacBook is almost never a dead drive: it’s a firmware that’s too old. These Macs need two things: an adapter (Apple’s SSD connector isn’t the M.2 format), and above all a Boot ROM that knows how to speak NVMe — a capability added by an update shipped inside macOS High Sierra. And that update can only be applied while the original drive is still in place.

Two obstacles, not one

Why it fails: keep the two problems separate

Swapping the original SSD for a consumer NVMe runs into two distinct issues that are often confused. The first is visible, the second is invisible — and that second one catches everyone out.

The connector isn’t standard

From 2013 onwards, Apple dropped SATA for a PCIe-format SSD… but with a proprietary connector (12+16 pins) that has nothing to do with the M.2 format of off-the-shelf NVMe drives. Hence the need for an adapter (such as a Sintech NGFF-to-Apple): it bridges the M.2 stick to the logic board, both mechanically and electrically. Without one, the stick won’t even fit.

Easy to solve: an adapter is all it takes — this is the lesser of the two obstacles.

The logic board doesn’t “know” how to speak NVMe

This is the crux, and the part that’s almost always overlooked. The original SSD in these Macs works using a protocol called AHCI. Modern NVMe drives, on the other hand, use the NVMe protocol — newer, faster, but unknown to the original firmware. The Boot ROM (the first software layer, which runs before macOS even starts) acts as a gatekeeper: if it only knows AHCI, an NVMe drive is, as far as it’s concerned… invisible.

The real cause: a frozen Apple logo, a prohibitory sign or a missing drive = firmware that ignores NVMe.
The good news

Apple did add NVMe… but through an update

Apple did add NVMe boot support to these Macs — just not out of the box. That support arrived with the firmware shipped inside macOS High Sierra (10.13), and it has been present in every release since. In other words, the NVMe capability lies dormant in a firmware update: until your Mac has received it, it stays blind to NVMe, even if the drive and adapter are flawless.

  • A Mac that’s up to date (that has run High Sierra or later) has already received the NVMe firmware → the NVMe works.
  • A Mac left on an old version (Sierra, El Capitan…) has never received this firmware → the NVMe won’t boot.
  • The crucial point: the firmware only updates from the original SSD. If you remove the Apple drive before the update, you have no way left to flash the Boot ROM. This is the classic mistake.

The right order of steps

5 steps to avoid hitting the wall

The golden rule fits in one sentence: you update the firmware BEFORE removing the original drive. Do it the other way round and you’re stuck.

STEP 1
Keep the original SSD
Leave the original Apple drive in place first; don’t remove it.
STEP 2
Install High Sierra+
Install macOS High Sierra or later: the firmware update is applied automatically.
STEP 3
Check
Make sure the Mac has restarted properly and the installation has run to completion.
STEP 4
Swap the drive
Shut down, then fit the NVMe on its adapter in place of the original SSD.
STEP 5
Reinstall macOS
Format the NVMe and reinstall macOS, for example via Internet Recovery.
Not to be overlooked

Three details that make the difference

  • Choosing the NVMe and the adapter. Not all NVMe drives behave the same on a Mac: certain models (particularly those without a cache, or a few specific series) cause trouble. Picking a model known to work well on Mac saves you the headaches.
  • Sleep (standby). On the 2013-2014 models, deep sleep could be a problem (the Mac wouldn’t wake). A firmware update, introduced from macOS Big Sur 11.0.1, fixed this behaviour: all the more reason to keep the firmware up to date.
  • The models concerned. MacBook Air 2013-2017, MacBook Pro Retina late 2013-2015, plus several iMac and Mac mini from the same period: all fitted with Apple’s proprietary PCIe SSD connector.
The myth to bust What many people believe — and it’s wrong
“My NVMe won’t boot: it must be faulty.”

Wrong, in the vast majority of cases. An NVMe that stays invisible on a 2013-2015 Mac is almost never a dead drive: it’s a firmware that’s too old and doesn’t yet know how to speak NVMe. The logic board first has to “learn” NVMe via the update shipped with High Sierra or later — and that update can only happen while the original drive is still in place. Follow the order, and the upgrade goes off without a hitch.

Firmware first, drive second.

Why doesn’t my NVMe show up in Disk Utility?

Because your Mac’s firmware (Boot ROM) doesn’t yet know the NVMe protocol. Until it has received the update shipped with macOS High Sierra or later, the drive stays invisible — even if the adapter is fine.

How do I update my MacBook’s firmware?

There’s no dedicated button: the firmware updates automatically when you install macOS High Sierra (or later) on the original SSD. That’s exactly why you must never remove that drive before doing the update.

I’ve already removed the original drive — what now?

Temporarily refit the original Apple SSD (or another drive the Mac recognises), install High Sierra on it to flash the firmware, then put your NVMe back in. Without a drive the Mac can boot from, there’s no way to apply the update.

Will any NVMe SSD do?

Not quite. You need an adapter (Apple’s connector isn’t the M.2 format) and, ideally, an NVMe model with a reputation for being stable on Mac. Some drives cause sleep or overheating issues: when in doubt, ask us for advice.
