iMac Power Cable: Which One for Your Model
Not all iMacs use the same power cable. Here is the one that matches your iMac by year, and what to do if the iMac still won't turn on.
Which cable for which iMac
| Your iMac | Cable |
|---|---|
| 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac, late 2009 to late 2011 | iMac 2009-2011 power cable |
| 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac, late 2012 to 2020 | iMac 2012-2020 power cable |
| 24-inch iMac M1, M3 or M4 (A2438, A2439, A2873, A2874, A3137, A3247), 2021 to 2024 | 24-inch iMac EU power cable |
Your iMac's year is shown in Apple menu > About This Mac. If the iMac no longer starts, look for the A model number engraved under the stand, or the serial number.
iMac won't turn on: the cable or the power supply?
- Plug the iMac into a different wall outlet, without a power strip.
- Try another compatible power cable.
- If the iMac stays off, the fault often comes from the internal power supply (iMac up to 2020) or from the logic board.
The internal power supply of iMacs up to 2020
Up to 2020, the power supply is a unit inside the iMac, behind the display. Our power supplies:
- 21.5-inch iMac (A1418, A2116), late 2012 to 2019: ADP-185BF power supply.
- 27-inch iMac (A1419, A2115), late 2012 to 2020: ADP-300AF power supply.
- 27-inch iMac (A1312), 2010-2011: 310 W power supply.
Replacing the internal power supply requires opening the iMac (display glued or magnetic depending on the year) and involves dangerous voltages: unplug the iMac and wait a few minutes before working on it.
