A Mac that will not start: what to do, in order
A Mac that will not start is almost never a single fault: it is a family of symptoms leading to very different causes. Taken in order, ten minutes rule out everything that costs nothing — and then you know what to replace.
The first split, in two questions
- No sign of life at all — no sound, no fan, no light on the charger: look at power first. Charger, cable, connector, wall socket, in that order.
- The machine powers on but never reaches the desktop — frozen Apple logo, stalled progress bar, question mark, restart loop: that is the system or the drive, and the recovery modes below are made for it.
The steps that cost nothing, in order
Do all of them, even the ones that seem pointless, and in this order. A good half of the machines that reach the workshop leave again after these four steps.
- Plug in the charger and leave the machine alone for twenty minutes. A deeply discharged battery does not react straight away.
- Try another wall socket, then another charger if you can. A dead charger gives no visible sign.
- Force a shutdown: hold the power button for ten seconds, release, wait five seconds, power on again.
- Unplug everything: USB stick, external drive, display, adapter, SD card. One faulty peripheral can block a boot on its own.
If your charger has an indicator light, watch it: permanently off despite changing sockets points to the charger or to the machine's power connector. That is the most common fault and the cheapest to fix.
Read the symptom, it names the cause
Each startup behaviour describes a precise stage. Find yours: it saves you from trying repairs that have nothing to do with the problem.
- Black screen but audible fan and a warm machine: it is booting, the display is not following. Look very closely at the screen in the dark — if a very faint image appears, it is the backlight or the display cable, not the logic board.
- Apple logo then a progress bar that always freezes at the same point: the system or the drive. Move on to safe mode, then recovery.
- Folder with a question mark: the machine can no longer find a startup disk. Drive disconnected, SSD at end of life, or system erased.
- Restart loop, a few seconds each time: often power that cannot hold, or a badly seated memory module on models where it is removable.
- Nothing at all, no light, no sound, even with a known-good charger: internal power or logic board. That is the only case that needs a workshop diagnosis.
The recovery modes and how to reach them
The shortcuts differ depending on whether your Mac has an Intel processor or an Apple chip. Check under Apple menu, About This Mac, before insisting on a combination that does not exist on your machine.

When it becomes a part
If the four steps and the recovery modes gave nothing, the problem is hardware. Here is what fails, in the order of frequency seen in the workshop.
- The charger and its cable. Cheapest part, most frequent fault, and a dead charger cannot be seen.
- The machine's power connector, MagSafe or USB-C. It wears, loosens, or blackens after a bad contact.
- The battery. Swollen, it deforms the case and can prevent startup; at end of life it no longer holds enough to boot.
- The SSD or its connector, typically when a question mark appears.
- The logic board, last. That is the diagnosis by elimination, never the first one.
Before ordering anything, read the model number engraved underneath, an A followed by four digits. And if your data is not backed up, say so to the workshop straight away: the order of operations is not the same when a drive has to be recovered first.
FAQ
My Mac powers on but the screen stays black, is it the logic board?
Not necessarily, and rarely so. In a dark room, look very closely at the screen: if a faint image appears, the computer is running and only the backlight is at fault. Also plug in an external display — if that shows the picture, the machine is fine and the problem is in the screen or its cable.
How long should I charge an unresponsive Mac?
Twenty minutes is enough in most cases. If after an hour on a charger you trust nothing has happened, there is no point waiting longer: the problem is elsewhere.
Safe mode starts, what does that tell me?
Good news: the basic hardware works. The fault comes from installed software, an extension or a setting. Restart normally, and if the freeze returns, uninstall whatever was added just before the first symptoms.
Can my data be recovered if the Mac will not start?
Usually yes. As long as the drive itself is alive, data can be recovered in a workshop even when the machine will not boot. Do not reinstall macOS before backing up: a reinstall can overwrite whatever was left to save.
