Mac keyboard keys that no longer respond or keep repeating

A dead key, a letter that repeats on its own, a whole keyboard that stops reacting? Between a setting, a speck of dust and a genuine fault, the cause isn’t always the one you’d expect. Here’s how to diagnose it, and when to replace the keyboard.

Place du Mac— Practical guide— July 4, 2026— 6 min read
The essentials

A keyboard acting up isn’t always a hardware fault: a setting (language, Slow Keys), a speck of dust under a key, or a stuck macOS service can be enough. Check these free leads first. If a key stays dead, repeats or sticks regardless — often after a spill or from wear — the keyboard gets replaced. On MacBooks, it’s often part of the top case. A simple test quickly isolates the cause.

Diagnosis

The causes, in the right order

From setting to part: rule out the software and the dust before concluding it needs a replacement.

Cause1

A misleading setting (language, Slow Keys)

Characters that don’t match? The layout (AZERTY/QWERTY) may have changed. Keys that “don’t register”? The accessibility options (Slow Keys, Sticky Keys) may be active. Plugging in an external keyboard that works isolates the problem.

Test: a USB/Bluetooth keyboard that works points to the internal keyboard or a setting.
Cause2

Dust or a crumb under the key

A single key that sticks or no longer responds often comes from a bit of debris trapped underneath. A blast of dry air, with the Mac tilted, can free it. Don’t go at it with a screwdriver: you’ll quickly damage the mechanism.

Cause3

A key that’s dead, repeats or sticks

If, despite settings and cleaning, a key stays dead, repeats on its own or stays pressed down, the mechanism is to blame. Depending on the model, you replace the key, the keyboard, or the top case that houses it.

Cause4

After a spill: several keys at once

When several keys fail at the same time, especially after a spill, that’s the signature of a liquid. The keyboard often needs replacing, and you have to check inside (the corrosion can spread further).

To test before replacing

Three free checks

They save you buying a part for a simple setting:

TEST 01
External keyboard
If it works, the problem is with the internal keyboard or a setting, not the system.
TEST 02
Language & accessibility
Check the layout (AZERTY/QWERTY) and turn off Slow Keys / Sticky Keys.
TEST 03
Blow out the key
Dry air, Mac tilted, to dislodge a crumb. Without forcing, without prying off the key.

Common misconception
✗ False
“A key acting up means you have to replace the whole Mac.”

No: a key, a keyboard or, at worst, the top case can be replaced — without changing the machine. And very often it isn’t even hardware: a language setting, an accessibility option or a crumb is enough to create the illusion of a fault. Test the free options first.

Key takeaway
If there’s one thing to remember

Setting, dust, then part.

Test an external keyboard, check language and accessibility, blow out the key: free. If a key stays dead, repeats or sticks — especially after a spill — the keyboard (or the top case) gets replaced, with a 2-year warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Mac keyboard: your questions

A single key no longer responds, what should I do?

Blow dry air under the key (Mac tilted) to dislodge a crumb, and check that no accessibility option is active. If the key stays dead, the mechanism is to blame and gets replaced.

A key repeats on its own, why?

A key that repeats often comes from debris or a worn or damaged mechanism (sometimes after a spill). Once cleaning brings no result, the key or the keyboard has to be replaced.

My keyboard types the wrong characters, is it broken?

Not necessarily: it’s often the layout that changed (AZERTY/QWERTY) or an active accessibility option. Check the keyboard settings before considering a repair.

Several keys are dead after a spill, is it repairable?

Yes, most of the time: the keyboard is replaced and the inside checked to rule out corrosion. Bring the Mac in quickly, without switching it back on or charging it if the spill is recent.

How much does a MacBook keyboard cost?

At Place du Mac, compatible keyboards range from about €11 to €140 depending on the model, tested and covered by a 2-year warranty. On some models, the keyboard is part of the top case.

My MacBook is a 2016-2018 with this problem, is it the “butterfly keyboard”?

Possibly: those models have a “butterfly” keyboard sensitive to dust, with its own solution. See our dedicated butterfly keyboard guide for this specific case.
