“Flexgate” refers to a common screen fault on MacBook Pro 13 and 15 inch (2016 to 2018, models A1706, A1707, A1708, A1989, A1990). It is caused by a backlight flex cable that is too short and wears out from opening and closing the screen. Here is how to recognise and repair it.
The symptoms of Flexgate
The most characteristic sign is the so-called “stage light” effect: vertical bright bands appear at the bottom of the screen, like stage spotlights. At a more advanced stage, the backlight goes out completely once the screen passes a certain opening angle (often beyond 40 degrees), while the image remains faintly visible under a torch.
What is the cause?
The panel is connected to the logic board by thin plastic flex cables. On these generations, the backlight flex cable is too tight: with each opening it stretches and eventually cracks at the T-CON board, at the bottom of the screen. It is a design flaw, independent of any impact.
How do you repair a Flexgate?
Two options exist. Replacing the flex cable alone is possible but delicate (micro-soldering) and not suitable for all models. The reliable and lasting solution is replacing the complete screen assembly (panel + revised flex cables).
