Mac webcam / camera not working : what to do ?

“No camera available”, a black image on video calls, or a blurry camera? Don’t worry: the vast majority of camera problems on a Mac are software-related and can be fixed without any repair. Here’s what to do — and the rare cases where it’s a hardware issue.

The essentials

On a Mac, the camera has no button: it turns on automatically when an app uses it. When it “doesn’t work”, it’s almost always: a permission that hasn’t been granted, another app hogging it, or a service that needs restarting. These cases are fixed in two minutes, for free. Hardware failure (often linked to the flex cable or the screen) is rare. Always start with the software.

Diagnosis

The causes, in the right order

Almost everything comes down to settings and apps. Hardware only comes last.

Cause1

Camera access permission

The number one case: the app (video call, browser) doesn’t have permission. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and turn on access for the app in question. On the web, also check the permission requested by the browser.

Reflex : after granting access, quit and relaunch the app.
Cause2

Another app is hogging the camera

The camera can only serve one app at a time. If a video call is left open in the background, the next one shows a black screen. Close the other apps that might be using it, then try again.

Cause3

A service to restart (or a reboot)

The macOS camera service can get stuck. A simple restart of the Mac sets it right in most cases. Also think about system and video-call app updates.

Cause4

The rare case: the camera hardware

If no app can see it (“no camera connected”) after all these tests, the trail turns to hardware: the flex cable or the camera module (built into the screen) may be at fault, often after an impact or liquid. This is a workshop diagnosis.

Do this first, for free

Three reflexes that fix almost everything

In the vast majority of cases, one of these actions is enough:

STEP 01
Allow the camera
Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera: turn on access for the app.
STEP 02
Close the other apps
One app at a time: quit video calls left open in the background.
STEP 03
Restart & update
A restart relaunches the camera service; install any available updates.
The solution

If really nothing works

First

Confirm it’s hardware

Before any repair, we make sure it isn’t software:

  • Is the camera missing from every app?
  • Does the green light come on when an app requests it?
  • A recent impact or liquid?

Misconception
✗ False
“My camera doesn’t work: it’s broken.”

In 9 cases out of 10, the camera is perfectly fine: it’s a missing permission, another app holding on to it, or a service to restart. Hardware failure is rare and mainly concerns the flex cable or the module built into the screen. Go through the software before thinking about a repair.

Key takeaway
If there’s just one thing to remember

Silent camera? It’s almost always software.

Permission, an app hogging the camera, a service to restart: three free actions fix nearly every case. Only if the camera stays invisible everywhere, after an impact or liquid, is a hardware diagnosis justified.

Frequently asked questions

Mac camera : your questions

My camera shows a black screen on video calls, why?

Most often, another application is already using the camera (one app at a time), or the active app doesn’t have permission. Close the other apps, check camera access in the settings, then relaunch.

How do I allow an app to use the camera on a Mac?

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and turn on access for the app. On a website, also accept the browser’s permission request, then relaunch the app.

My Mac shows “no camera connected”, what should I do?

Restart first: this relaunches the camera service and fixes many cases. If the message persists in every app after updates and a restart, the trail turns to hardware (flex cable or camera module).

The camera’s green light doesn’t come on, is it serious?

The light comes on as soon as an app activates the camera. If it never comes on, even with permission granted and after a restart, a hardware diagnosis is justified.

My camera is blurry or poor quality, can it be repaired?

Gently clean the lens and check that no film or cover has been left on it. If the image stays abnormal, a damaged module (often after an impact) may be to blame: a diagnosis will confirm it.

Can the camera be repaired separately from the screen?

The camera module is built into the display assembly on most Macs. Depending on the model and the fault, we work on the flex cable, the module, or the display assembly. A diagnosis identifies the best option.
