Mac serial number lookup: find your exact model and the right part

“13-inch MacBook Pro 2020” isn't enough to order a part: three different models share that name. With the serial number, our free decoder finds your Mac's exact model and takes you straight to the parts that fit it.

In short

You enterThe decoder finds
The serial number (10 to 12 characters)The exact model: A number, size, year, number of ports, chip or processor
An A model number (e.g. A2338)The model, or the possible years to choose from if there are several
Then the type of partOnly the parts we have for that model, with a link to their page

The decoder is free, with no account or email needed. It recognises MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio and Mac Pro, from older models to the latest ones.

Why the Mac's name isn't enough

Apple gives the same marketing name to Macs whose parts are not the same. Three examples we see every week:

  • 13-inch MacBook Pro 2020: A2251 (Intel, four ports), A2289 (Intel, two ports) and A2338 (M1 chip). The screen, battery and keyboard are different.
  • 13-inch MacBook Pro 2016-2017: A1706 with Touch Bar and four ports, A1708 without Touch Bar and with two ports. Battery, keyboard and flex cables are not interchangeable.
  • 24-inch iMac M1 2021: A2438 (four ports) and A2439 (two ports). Several internal parts change from one model to the other.

Even the A number doesn't always settle it: A1466 covers the 13-inch MacBook Air from 2012 to 2017, and some parts change depending on the year. The serial number, on the other hand, is unique to your Mac: it gives the exact year and configuration.

Where to find your Mac's serial number

  • If the Mac starts up: Apple menu > About This Mac. The serial number appears under the model name.
  • MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro: on the underside of the Mac, in small print near the hinges, after the word “Serial”.
  • iMac: under the stand. Mac mini, Mac Studio: on the underside of the case.
  • If the Mac no longer starts up: on the underside of the Mac, on the original box (barcode label) or on the invoice.

On a MacBook, the model number (A1466, A2338…) is engraved in the same place, on the underside. If the serial number has worn off, enter this A number in the decoder.

How to use the decoder

  1. Open the serial number decoder (it's also at the top of our home page, “Identify my Mac”).
  2. Type or paste the serial number, then confirm.
  3. The “Mac identified” card appears: model, A number, processor, graphics card, memory, storage, display and colour when known.
  4. Choose the part from the list: it only shows the parts available for that model.
  5. The button takes you to the part's page, with its variants and price.

Recent Macs (since 2021)

Since 2021, Apple has assigned random 10-character serial numbers: they can no longer be decoded “by hand”. Our decoder recognises them too; for a number it has never seen before, the search may take a few seconds. If it doesn't succeed, enter the A number engraved on the underside of the Mac.

Frequently asked questions

Is the decoder free?

Yes, free and with no sign-up. It's there to help you find the right part; you don't have to order.

Does the serial number tell me my Mac's colour?

Often, yes: the colour appears in the “Mac identified” card when it is known. It matters for displays, housings and trackpads.

Does the decoder show the Apple warranty?

No. For the warranty, use Apple's “Check Coverage” page. Our decoder is for identifying the model and its parts.

My Mac isn't recognised, what should I do?

Check the number (the digit 0 and the letter O are often confused), try the A number engraved on the underside of the Mac, or write to us with a photo of the underside of the Mac: we'll find the part with you.

Do you ship outside France?

Yes. Place du Mac is a European shop: our parts come with a 2-year warranty and are shipped throughout Europe.
