MacBook Keyboard: The Right Language and the Right Keycap Kit
A MacBook keyboard is chosen by two criteria: the layout (ANSI, ISO or JIS) and the language printed on the keys. For a single broken key, a keycap kit is often enough. Here is how to find your way around.
ANSI, ISO, JIS: three keyboard shapes
- ANSI: US keyboard (US QWERTY). The Return key is on a single row and the left Shift key is long.
- ISO: European keyboards (French AZERTY, German QWERTZ, British QWERTY, Spanish, Italian…). The Return key is L-shaped and there is one extra key next to the left Shift key.
- JIS: Japanese keyboard, with its own keys.
An ANSI keyboard and an ISO keyboard do not have the same keys: you cannot switch from one to the other just by changing the keycaps. So check the shape of your Return key before ordering.

One broken key: the keycap kit
When a single key is torn off or damaged, there is no need to replace the whole keyboard: a keycap kit replaces the keycap and its mechanism. The kit depends on the type of keyboard:
- 13-inch MacBook Pro 2009-2012: AP02 kits (French, Italian, Spanish, British) or AP04 (French, Italian, Spanish); compare the mechanism with the photo on the product page.
- 13-inch MacBook Air 2012-2015: AP08 kits (German, Danish).
- MacBook Air and Pro Retina 2012-2015: AP11 kit (German).
- Butterfly keyboards (MacBook and MacBook Pro 2015-2019): AP12 kits ISO, ANSI or JIS.
- Scissor-mechanism keyboards (MacBook Air and Pro 2019-2025): AP19 kits ISO, ANSI or JIS.
A US MacBook with an AZERTY layout
Does your MacBook have a US (ANSI) keyboard and you want French keys? Our conversion kits replace the keycaps to show AZERTY on an ANSI keyboard: AP12 kit for the 13-inch MacBook Pro 2016-2019, AP19 kit for the MacBook Air and Pro 2019-2025. You then just need to choose the French layout in System Settings > Keyboard.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my keyboard is ANSI or ISO?
Look at the Return key: if it is on a single row, it is an ANSI keyboard; if it is L-shaped, it is an ISO keyboard.
Is a British keyboard ANSI?
No: the British keyboard is QWERTY, but with an ISO layout, with an L-shaped Return key, like the French keyboard.
Do I need to change the keyboard to switch to AZERTY?
Not necessarily: if the printed keys suit you, the layout can be changed in System Settings > Keyboard. To get AZERTY letters on the keys, you need a French keyboard or, on a recent ANSI keyboard, a conversion kit.
